Founders Story:
Kelechi as a first-generation Nigerian was inspired by the vibrant colors and ecstatic patterns of African fabrics and received warm compliments whenever she adored these dresses in public. Post a few referrals of designers, she clearly discovered the opportunity to connect African designers to the rest of the world via the e-commerce route.
With her urge to grow and utilize her technical skills, she went on to create and launch ZUVAA in 2014 with an initial investment of $500 investment. In the next couple of years, ZUVAA generated over $2 million in sales and launched various pop-up shops across the country. Kelechi Anyadiegwu is the proud founder and former CEO of ZUVAA.

Did Zuvaa get a deal on Shark Tank?
In his pitch, the founder of ZUVAA, Kelechi sought an investment of $460,000 investment for a 10% stake. The business model was questioned primarily, by the sharks how will the remuneration of Designers work? Is it order-based or monthly-based – how does one evaluate it. How many such Designers are optimum and what allocation of funds are expected for such expansion?
Daymond has a question on what happens if there is a return, which can cause legal implications if a return has to go to Africa. Kevin was in and made her debt offer at 12% interest plus 10% of her company. Kelechi declines the offer as it was not feasible for her.
Eventually, Kelechi realized her business model was not mature enough to get sharks’ investment. The Shark tank event ended as a No Deal.
What Happened to Zuvaa After Shark Tank?
In 2018, Zuvaa crossed $2 million in revenue and was valued Zuvaa at $4.6 million at the time of the Shark Tank pitch. In 2019, Kelechi issued a public notice to announce the shutdown of ZUVAA. The key aspect of the letter is the company simply grew too fast too quickly and did not manage the right infrastructure to deal with this overwhelming demand.
Currently, ZUVAA is out of business and plans to reopen under new management in 2020. In 2021, however, with the emergence of Anyadiegwu’s new company UjuuMedia, there is no doubt she has learned from her failure and become a better entrepreneur – gearing herself up for more success in the upcoming future.
