Guesstimate Example #2 – Estimate the distance your pen covered in an English Board Exam

Q. Estimate the distance your pen covered in an English Board Exam?

To calculate the total distance, we will first find out the average length of a letter. Since it is a bit difficult to estimate the length of a curved letter, we will take the length of a letter with straight lines say, ‘z’.

Assuming the height to be approx. 0.5cm and the two horizontal lines to be another 0.5 cm each that gives us a total length of 1.5cm.

On Average, a word contains 5 letters and a sentence contains 8 words. That gives us 40 letters a sentence and total length to be 60cm.

Long answer questions typically require you to write up to 20 lines of answers and the short ones ask you to write 8 lines.

Assuming a split between the long answer and short type questions of 30:70, and total questions to be 20. That gives us 6 long answer and 14 short answer questions.

Thus total length of all answers is = 6*60cm*20 + 14*60cm*8 = 7200cm + 6720cm = 13920cm = 139.20m
