Q. What amount of pencils or pens does a student uses in his entire education up to his undergraduate?
Assumptions:
1) The size of a typical pencil is 20cm.
2) A major amount of pencils by an Indian is used only till class 5th. After this amount of pencils is very less.
3) Considering all the notebooks to be of A4 size.
4) Pencil can be used only until its length is 4cm.
5) A typical notebook has 160 pages.
6) Every subject requires a total of two notebooks.
7) Change of the refill is considered a new pen
Calculation:
Let’s say when a pencil is sharpened its length is reduced by 1cm. One needs to sharpen a pencil after writing every A4 sheet ( including both sides).
So, a single pencil can be used to write 16 pages.
The number of pencils used to write a single notebook= 10.
Assuming a typical ball pen can write about 20 A4 sheets.
Number of pens used to write a single notebook=8
Total number of notebooks used for which pencils are used= 2*( 2*3 + 5*5) = 62
Total number of pencils required = 62*10 = 620 Pencils
Total number of notebooks for which pens are used= 2*(7*6)= 84
Total number of pens required= 84*8= 672 Pens
