What is Dreamland Baby?
Dreamland Baby is a startup that manufactures weighted sleep sacks and blankets that help your baby to sleep faster and for a longer duration. This patent pending product is developed by Tara Williams, to help new parents manage the sleep schedule of their newborn.
This proprietary product uses CoverCalm Technology, which ensures even weight distribution from the baby’s shoulders to toes.
This evenly distributed weight helps the babies sleep faster and fall into a deeper slumber. The product harnesses the power of deep touch stimulation.
Founder Story:
Tara Williams, the founder and owner of Dreamland Baby is herself a mother and experienced great difficulty in putting her newborn to sleep.
She then came up with the idea of these weighted blankets that help the baby sleep faster and get more rest through the night.
Tara’s mother-in-law helped her sew the first “sack” that became her product. The sacks are wearable weighted blankets that also act like sleeping bags. She raised $24,541 on Kickstarter in 2019 just in 72 hours to get her business started.
Did Dreamland Baby get a deal on Shark Tank?
Tara entered the tank seeking an investment of $100,000 in exchange for 10% of her company. Her company had nearly $30,000 in lifetime sales. About $25,000 was from a crowdfunding event that she hosted online and the other $5,000 was from her own website.
Almost all the Sharks were skeptical about the company’s sales numbers. Sharks like Kevin and Robert dropped out immediately after the pitch stating that they did not see any scope for return on investment.
Only Lori seemed to be interested in her product and gave her an offer of $100,000 for 25%, to which Tara countered it to 20%. The deal was then ultimately settled at $100,000 for 22.5%.
What happened to Dreamland Baby after Shark Tank?
After her appearance on Shark Tank, the company managed to grab the attention of its niche market, newly made parents. Unfortunately, the deal between Lori and Tara never closed. Currently, the owner has continued selling her products from her website and on Amazon.
For some time, the company reduced its Amazon inventory due to Amazon listing various knock-off products.
In December 2021, however, the company reached a lifetime sales of $10 million with retail outlets in Target, Nordtrom, Babylist, and Bloomingdales. As of August 2022, their annual revenue stands at $1 million.
Product Details:
- Dreamland Baby produces “sacks” which are a kind of cross between sleeping bags and weighted blankets.
- The weight is located on the top of the weighted sack only and is designed to promote side and back sleeping.
- The product helps in a kind of swaddling but with a bit more gentle pressure.
- The weight comes from Poly pellets sewn between layers of cotton fabric.
- The products are available for $79 and more on both Amazon and her own website.
What’s the net worth of Dreamland Baby?
The company entered the tank with an ask of $100,000 for 10% equity valuing the company at $1 million, the owner however decided to walk away with a deal of $100,000 for 22.5% equity, thus dropping the valuation to $444k.
The company has benefitted a lot from their visit to Shark Tank and even though the deal with Lori did not get closed, the company has managed to reach an annual revenue of $1 million with an estimated net worth of $2.5 million as of 2023.
