First Saturday Lime Shark Tank Update

In Shark Tank episode 1120, siblings Jana McDaniel, Jessica Jacobs, and Jessica’s husband Zac McDaniel presented their innovative pest control product, First Saturday Lime, hoping to secure a deal with one of the Sharks.

From Farm Life to Founding an Eco-Friendly Brand

Jana and Jessica grew up on a farm in Oklahoma, where they learned about the benefits of lime from their father, who owned a limestone business. Lime is known to dry out bugs, making it a natural insect repellent and killer.

The idea for First Saturday Lime came from Jana’s desire for a safe, chemical-free pest control solution that could be used around pets and children. Traditional lime can burn skin and eyes, so the sisters partnered with a chemist friend to create an insoluble form of lime that retains its bug-repellent properties but is safe for humans and animals.

The Journey Begins

In 2017, they bagged their first batch of First Saturday Lime—a thousand bags—and hit the road. Though sales were slow initially, their persistence paid off. Today, the product is available on Amazon and the company’s website.

The name First Saturday encourages customers to use the product on the first Saturday of every month, either to treat infestations or as a preventative measure. Users simply spread the lime around the perimeter of their homes to keep insects away. At $29.99 for a 20-pound bag, it’s a cost-effective alternative to hiring a pest control company.

Shark Tank Pitch Recap

The trio entered the Tank seeking $100,000 for 10% equity. They shared their story, explained the product, and highlighted the patent on their manufacturing process. At the time of the pitch, they had achieved $150,000 in sales for 2019, projecting $350,000 for the year.

The Sharks were impressed by the margins—a 20-pound bag costs just $1.60 to produce and sells for $19.99. However, enthusiasm dipped when they learned that free shipping costs an additional $10.00.

Here’s how the Sharks reacted:

  • Robert Herjavec: Felt they lacked industry knowledge and opted out.
  • Mark Cuban: Didn’t see how he could add value and went out.
  • Kevin O’Leary: Was puzzled by the branding (a frog and lime connection).

Ultimately, Lori Greiner and Daniel Lubetzky offered $100,000 for 33.3%, but Jana countered with 20%. When they wouldn’t budge, Kevin swooped in with a counteroffer: $100,000 for 25%, which they accepted.

First Saturday Lime Post-Shark Tank Update

Since the deal with Kevin closed, First Saturday Lime has expanded significantly:

  • The product is now available on Amazon, Home Depot, Walmart, and over 600 independent garden centers across the USA.
  • By October 2023, the company was generating around $800,000 in annual revenue.
  • As of July 2024, they introduced new products, including an insect repellent spray and bracelets, with revenue climbing to $1.5 million annually.

Why First Saturday Lime Stands Out

The company’s commitment to eco-friendly, pet-safe, and affordable pest control has resonated with customers. Whether for homes, farms, or gardens, First Saturday Lime offers an effective solution without the harmful side effects of chemical pesticides.
