Founder Story:
The founder of Ghia, Melanie Masarin, was from France and moved to Los Angeles, California, where she started this company after working for many other companies and acquiring experience.
She vividly remembered her mother and grandmother preparing nonalcoholic drinks for her family to enjoy over the day. She then started her company in order to be able to share her idea of these nonalcoholic aperitifs with the whole of the world.
After doing well in her first year with $2.5 million in sales, she comes to the shark tank to try and secure a deal from the sharks.
What are Ghia Drinks?
Ghia Drinks is a beverage company that produces a line of non-alcoholic aperitifs made from natural ingredients such as fruit, herbs, and spices. The company was founded in 2018 by a group of friends who were looking for a non-alcoholic drink option that still had the complexity and depth of flavor of a traditional cocktail.
Ghia Drinks currently offers two varieties of their aperitifs: “Ghia” and “Spritz.” Ghia is described as having a complex flavor profile that combines bitter and sweet notes with hints of ginger and citrus. Spritz is a lighter, more effervescent option that is designed to be mixed with soda or tonic water.
The company’s drinks are made with organic and all-natural ingredients and are free from added sugars, gluten, and artificial flavors. They are marketed as a healthier and more mindful alternative to traditional alcoholic beverages.
Did the Ghia Drinks get a deal on Shark Tank?
The founder, Melanie Masarin walks into the tank and introduces herself to the sharks, asking $250,000 for 5% of her company. She talks about her product and how it has the potential to replace alcohol as a go-to drink after a long day of work. The sharks are interested, so she gives them a few samples of her product in a variety of flavors.
Kevin then asks about sales, to which she says that they have made $2.5 million, which the sharks are happy to hear, but later she says that she lost $1 million as the company had raised $3.5 million, which the sharks are shocked by.
She then says that the 5% she is offering is out of her 57% share as she wants a shark to come in as a mentor to her and help grow the company. After some discussion regarding pre-revenue rounds of investment and other things,
Daymond and Lori say that they like the product as a company, but can’t really endorse it due to them having certain health issues, so they back out. Mark thinks that this sector is very niche and if the company wishes to stay afloat, it will have to spend millions in order to prepare for any other problems they face, so he also goes out.
Robert appreciates Melanie’s efforts and the place she has reached and offers to give her what she asks, but Kevin butts in by saying that he also wants to make an offer as Chef wonderful for the same amount but for 10%, which rubs Robert the wrong way and he says that if Melanie listens to him, he will go out, and she does, just to listen to his opinion, but Robert still goes out.
Melanie just wanted to listen to all of their opinions, but she leaves without a deal.
What happened to Ghia Drinks after Shark Tank?
Even though Ghia was not able to secure an investor from among the sharks, they are still going strong in the Beverage industry, which is valued to be worth around $800 billion and counting and is surely an expensive sector to get into.
Ghia expanded its product range in April 2021 by introducing Le Spritz, a ready-to-drink can that contains Ghia’s signature formula, complemented with a touch of sparkling water and a blend of yuzu and rosemary. This combination has become a popular at-home recipe among Ghia’s customers.
Shortly thereafter, Ghia launched Ghia Ginger, an 8oz canned drink that is perfect for the fall season, with an equal balance of refreshing and warming flavors. It contains the original Ghia formula, with added fresh ginger juice, responsibly sourced wildflower honey, a hint of black pepper, and a splash of sparkling water, resulting in a non-alcoholic beverage with a slow burn.
They even seem to have brought around a new product, The Totem glasses, with the help of Sophie Lou Jacobsen, dedicated to making drinks more colorful.
