Founder Story:

William “Zip” Howell began his journey by making beef jerky for his near and dear ones which became a famous recipe in 1999. Mr. Howell has been an excellent salesman in the Yellow pages, which earned him the name “Mr. Zip”. With the family business turning into a true business Mr. Howell introduced “Uncle Zip” beef jerky into the market. His son Ken Howell is now running the business, post he lost his father in the third year of the business which happens to be the favorite of the local community in Fayetteville.

The product tastes good and is fresh, with 2 months shelf life. There are eight flavors that you would love to try.

Did Uncle Zip’s Beef Jerky get a deal on shark tank?

Ken Howell, pitched his business for $25,000 at 20% at Shark Tank. Ken explains why their product is superior to the others as there are no additives or preservatives which allows their fresh taste to beef jerky lovers. On the flip side, the shelf life of Uncle Zip’s Beef Jerky is only 2 months and others are longer because the competitors use chemical preservatives which makes the taste a tinge strong.

Ken hands over the samples for the sharks to taste and the guest shark also reflects the appreciation that the beef jerky is good in taste. Robert was keen to know why it is called “Uncle Zip”, Ken explains his father was in Yellow Page sales and he was a great salesman so would zip in and zip out like the zip stuff, which led to his success in being named Uncle Zip. That’s were Uncle Zip got its name into the Beef Jerky business that his father started.

Robert and Daymond ask about sales performance, Ken starts with the unfortunate sales and is caught by the sharks immediately. The sales figures were $100,000 when his father was in but are now down to $40k or $50 K. The next question fired by sharks was on what is the need for $25k now as an investment. Ken would like to scale up his business and would like to increase the number of plants for processing.

He and the guest shark are out for the same reason.

Barbara also states that ken does not need any help and he should be able to turn it around by himself as they could achieve $100,000 in their third year. She is also out. Ken Howell is devastated as he walks out without a deal but was determined to stay in the business.
